Dir: Yorgos Lanthimos | UK/USA/Ireland | 2018 | 119 mins
Cast: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Mark Gatiss, Joe Alwyn
Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone give superlative performances in Yorgos Lanthimos’s (The Lobster) most accessible film to date: an outrageous period comedy.
In the early 18th century: England fights the French and a mercurial Queen Anne (Colman) sits on the throne. But the country is really governed by her companion, Lady Sarah (Weisz), and as the war consumes Sarah’s time, ambitious new servant, Abigail (Stone) steps into the breach. Brilliantly acted by Colman in particular, it’s a singular black comedy of status, full of scabrous, misanthropic wit and wicked intrigue; a perfectly cut diamond of a film.
