A noirish romance filmed and set during WWII, Casablanca’s appeal never fades. Humphrey Bogart (African Queen) epitomises laconic cool as Rick Blaine, an expat American running a nightclub in wartime Casablanca and trying to maintain relations with Vichy and Gestapo forces while doing so. Conflict is never far away with desperate refugees trying to source illicit visas and flee. Then his old lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) returns with her new husband, Resistance fighter Victor Laszlo (Paul Heinreid) – and their bittersweet reunion is interrupted by Laszlo’s need for flight. With perfect casting, nostalgic songs and an endlessly quotable script, it’s a truly sublime film.
