With the support of the Independent Cinema Office and BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.
The BFI will stage the UK’s greatest ever celebration of film and TV comedy this winter; from boundary-pushing writers and performers who say the unsayable, to silent slapstick heroes of the past and disreputable and anarchic voices of the present, this season will celebrate the best-loved works of comic genius, with an array of talent taking part throughout the season.
Dir: Colin Higgins | USA | 1980 | 109 mins
Cast: ane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton
Celebrating the power of female friendship, 9 to 5 stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton as three office workers sick of their egotistical, sexist boss. Judy (Fonda), Violet (Tomlin) and Doralee (Parton) couldn’t be more different, but, after bonding over mistreatment by manager Franklin (Dabney Coleman) – who yells at Judy, takes credit for Violet’s ideas and harasses Doralee – they club together to change their workplace for good. With a sequel now in the works, this is a perfect opportunity to discover or revisit a feminist comedy classic that was decades ahead of its time, tackling issues that almost 40 years later are only now being taken seriously.
