The BFI will stage the UK’s greatest ever celebration of film and TV comedy this winter; from boundary-pushing writers and performers who say the unsayable, to silent slapstick heroes of the past and disreputable and anarchic voices of the present, this season will celebrate the best-loved works of comic genius, with an array of talent taking part throughout the season.
Dir: Pedro Almodóvar | Spain | 1988 | 89 mins | Spanish w/Eng ST
Cast: Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Julieta Serrano
Melding melodrama with screwball farce, unimpeachable black comedy Women on the Verge… secured Pedro Almodóvar’s place at the vanguard of modern European cinema. Starring Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas, it tells the story of Pepa (Maura) who resolves to commit suicide after a breakup. Fortunately, she’s interrupted by a deliciously chaotic series of events; as well as many other characters, all themselves on the verge of a full emotional collapse. Exploring the volatility of sexual desire and romantic relationships as well as the possibilities of personal liberation, Women on the Verge… oozes with Almodovar’s unique vision, irreverent humour and vibrant visual sense.
