Cast: Victor Polster, Arieh Worthalter, Katelijne Damen
Lukas Dhont’s stunning directorial debut – which won both the Camera d’Or for best first feature and the Queer Palm at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival – follows 15-year-old Lara (Victor Polster), an aspiring ballerina who, born a boy, is transitioning to become a girl. Taking medication to suppress her hormones, she is desperately awaiting surgery while also facing increasing physical and emotional pressures at her prestigious dance academy. Featuring a truly remarkable central performance from cisgender actor Victor Polster, who evinces a poignant vulnerability in his first screen role, Dhont’s transgender coming-of-age story is a nuanced, powerfully empathetic film that sensitively depicts Lara’s complex inner world.
