Finely layered and nuanced, Robert Guegiguian’s (The Snows of Kilimanjaro) intricate family drama is a treat for fans of French cinema. By a bay near Marseilles lies a picturesque villa owned by an elderly man, Maurice (Fred Ulysse), whose children have gathered by his side for his last days: actress Angèle (Ariane Ascaride), activist Joseph (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) and Armand (Gérard Meylan), the only one who stayed in Marseilles to run the family’s small restaurant. It’s time for them to weigh up what they have inherited of their father’s ideals and the community he created in this magical place; but the arrival of a group of migrants nearby throws their reflections into turmoil.
