Dir: Bart Layton | USA | 2018 | 88 mins
Cast: Harry Dean Stanton, Tom Skerritt, Ron Livingston, David Lynch
In his final leading role before his death in 2017, the great Harry Dean Stanton (Cool Hand Luke; Paris, Texas) shines as ‘Lucky’ – a cranky 90-year-old staring down mortality and his past in an Arizona desert town – who finds there are still opportunities for self-discovery, even enlightenment, at his advanced age. John Carroll Lynch’s debut offers an elegiac, sensitive meditation on the spiritual aspects of growing old, complete with pleasing deadpan humour, and with an impressive supporting cast including Tom Skerritt, Ron Livingston, Ed Begley Jr and (enjoyably) director David Lynch, it’s a fitting tribute to Stanton and his iconic career.
