Dir: Robert Mullan | UK | 2017 | 105 mins
Cast: David Tennant, Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon, Gabriel Byrne
David Tennant gives a masterful, mercurial performance in Robert Mullan’s (Letters to Sofija, Gitel) absorbing portrayal of radical psychiatrist and writer R. D. Laing, who became a ‘60s counterculture hero for his ‘anti-psychiatry’ experiments and for questioning the ethics of providing harsh, prison-like hospitals and forcing tranquilisers and electroconvulsive shock treatment on patients. With excellent support from Elisabeth Moss (as his partner Angie) and Gabriel Byrne and Michael Gambon as his patients, the film’s screenplay mirrors the hard-drinking Laing’s own departure from convention, exploring scenes from a life in freewheeling fashion.
“David Tennant gives a brilliant performance as RD Laing, the radical psychiatrist who rewrote the rules on mental health treatment” **** Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
