This dynamic Egyptian thriller has won multiple awards including the Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize (2017). Made by acclaimed Swedish filmmaker Tarik Saleh (Tommy, Metropia), it brings a Nordic noir sensibility to a Cairo story inspired by a real case. Detective Noredin (Fares Fares) investigates a murder in the city’s Nile Hilton Hotel. Initially, the amoral Noredin views it as simply another opportunity to pocket a few more bribes. But, uncovering increasingly disturbing details about the reach of the crime, our ambivalent anti-hero eventually finds his conscience piqued. An intelligent, excoriating portrait of systemic corruption, set – movingly – in the days before the 2011 Tahrir Square uprising.
