Eight years into his filmmaking ban, celebrated Iranian New Wave director Jafar Panahi’s (The White Balloon, Taxi) is another provocative, perceptive sideways glance at Iranian society’s inequalities and contradictions. Actress Behnaz Jafari, distraught after receiving a plea from a young girl whose family have banned her from studying at drama school, turns to filmmaker Panahi for help. Together they travel to Iran’s rural north to find her, en route meeting locals who, while often charming, can’t help but reveal the retrograde attitudes behind their traditions. Playful and audacious, 3 Faces is an odyssey of enlightenment from one of the world’s most courageous contemporary filmmakers.
