Undoubtedly one of the greatest films ever made, Fellini’s shimmering, self-reflexive masterpiece is perhaps the ultimate art-movie, and beloved by critics and audiences alike. Marcello Mastroianni plays troubled filmmaker Guido Anselmi, struggling with creative paralysis as he attempts to get a new film off the ground. Tired of his wife, bored of his mistress, and in need of a holiday he retreats to a spa for peace but is still targeted by aspiring actors, scatty writers and obsequious yes-men. Recalling loves past and present as he tries to resolve his many entanglements, Anselmi finds his production becoming ever more autobiographical.
“Fellini’s hallucinatory masterpiece […] its opening alone is one of the most incredible things in cinema” ***** Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
