Dir: J. A. Bayona | Spain/UK/USA | 2016 | 108 mins
Cast: Lewis MacDougall, Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver

Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones and Sigourney Weaver star in Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s (The Orphanage, The Impossible) heartbreaking, magical fable, based on Patrick Ness’ novel, about a young boy struggling to face loss. Set in a northern town, it sees 12-year-old Connor (Lewis MacDougall) thrown into turmoil by his mother’s (Jones) illness. Scared and angry, he’s confronted one night by a monstrous tree come to life (voiced by Neeson). With shades of Guillermo Del Toro’s gothic inventiveness, A Monster Calls is overwhelmingly moving; combining superbly pitched drama with beautiful watercolour animation, it’s a fantastical tale of real-life tragedies and truths for all ages.
