Dir: Asif Kapadia| UK | 2015 | 127 mins
Amy Winehouse, her extraordinary talent and her personal demons are explored in Asif Kapadia’s (Senna) almost unbearably moving documentary. Using intimate home footage of Winehouse, we see her outspoken, hilarious and volatile personality and her development from the young talent with the superb voice to the fully-fledged star in total command of her musicality, though sadly not of her addictions. Kapadia interviews Winehouse’s family and former husband Blake Fielder-Civil, exploring her eventually fatal problems with drugs and alcohol as well as her persecution by the tabloid press, in a devastating portrait of one of recent history’s most brilliant and singular performers.
“A tragic masterpiece […] stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and almost mesmerically absorbing” ***** Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
