Dir: Catherine Corsini | France | 2018 | 135 mins | French w/English subtitles
Cast: Virginie Efira, Niels Schneider, Jehnny Beth

Based on the novel by controversial French writer Christine Angot, Catherine Corsini’s (Summertime, Leaving) film begins in the 1950s, as office worker Rachel (Virginie Efira) falls for dashing, Nietzsche-reading sophisticate Philippe (Niels Schneider). Embarking on a passionate relationship together, he nevertheless won’t share his life with her and she raises their daughter alone, before – years later – a darker side of his nature is brought shockingly to light. Superbly performed and directed, this is a hugely impressive work, its meticulous period recreation and potent feminist voice echoing the 1980s films of Diane Kurys, with a formidable performance from rising star Efira.

“A brilliantly dark and tender family drama […] Beautiful” The Guardian
