Iranian-American writer/director Desiree Akhavan’s debut Appropriate Behaviour has already received great acclaim. It revolves around Shirin, a bisexual Iranian-American (played by Akhavan) from Brooklyn who has job, a recent break-up behind her and a life going nowhere fast. It’s written in the same witty, exploratory vein as Lena Dunham’s Girls and Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha. This bisexual hipster is still in the closet to her strict Persian parents, and Akhavan explores issues of sexuality and cultural identity here, but this is only one thread in a sophisticated and charming and very funny look at urban youth and arrested development.
“Appropriate Behaviour is alive. The screenplay is packed with smart remarks, clever and unpredictable turns of phrase that knock you off balance” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times
