Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart) thriller (scripted by Jerusalem playwright Jez Butterworth) has a stunning cast headlined by Johnny Depp. He’s fantastic as Irish gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, who while his brother Bill (Benedict Cumberbatch) works in the Massachusetts Senate, pursues a life of crime in corrupt 1970s Boston. Approached by the FBI, he’s persuaded to help them fight the Italian mob: but as their alliance spins out of control, Bulger increases his power to become one of the most dangerous gangsters in US history. A richly drawnm vastly compelling crime drama, also starring Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Fanning and Juno Temple.

“Compelling true-crime drama is a mighty comeback for Johnny Depp […] acted and directed with tremendous confidence and verve” **** Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
