Director of the much loved Hunt for the Wilderpeople (and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok) Taika Waititi’s Boy – one of the most successful films ever in Waititi’s native New Zealand – is a fresh, hilarious delight. It’s 1984 and on New Zealand’s rural East Coast, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is changing kids’ lives. Boy – a dreamer who lives with his brother Rocky, a tribe of cousins and his Nan, dreams longingly of his absent father Alamein. In his fantasies, he imagines Alamein is a deep sea diver, a war hero, even a relation of Michael Jackson himself – but the truth is more prosaic, and when Alamein returns, Boy is forced to confront it.
