Cast: Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, Cyril Raymond
Directed by David Lean and scripted by Noel Coward, Brief Encounter is one of the most powerfully romantic films of all time; capturing the headiness, longing and emotional volatility of forbidden love. Celia Johnson is Laura, a housewife and mother who meets doctor Alec (Trevor Howard) by happenstance at a railway station. As their acquaintance grows, so does their unexpected attraction; but both are married – so, desperately in love, they must choose whether to be together or apart. Filmed in 1945, it’s an undoubted period piece but so beautifully made and performed (and bolstered by a famously passionate Rachmaninoff score), it remains utterly timeless.
