Dir: Kelly Reichardt | USA | 2016 | 107 mins
Cast: Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, Lily Gladstone, Kristen Stewart, Jared Harris, James Le Gros

Winner of ‘Best Film’ at the London Film Festival, Kelly Reichardt’s (Wendy and Lucy, Old Joy) latest is an exquisite mood piece, a meditation on the lives of women in rural Montana. Based on short stories by American writer Maile Meloy, it studies lawyer Laura (Laura Dern); Gina (Michelle Williams), a wife and mother building a home and Jamie (Lily Gladstone), a lonely ranch hand. All are embattled – Laura by a disgruntled client, Gina by her unsupportive husband and Jamie by a sudden, passionate attraction to Beth, a teacher (Kristen Stewart). Envisioning her heroines as pioneers, Reichardt elicits luminous performances in this slow-burning, melancholic, austerely beautiful film.
