Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece Charulata (The Lonely Wife) was made a year after Mahanagar (The Big City). Both tell the stories of women existing in a male dominated society who yearn to follow their own desires. Largely ignored by her pretentious husband, Charulata spends her days reading and wandering around her large home, peering at the outside world through ornate opera glasses. When her husband invites his cousin Amal to stay, she’s stirred by his intellect, and embarks on a journey to find her own voice as a writer.
“One of Ray’s best films, with a superb music score of his own composition” Tom Milne, Time Out
