Dir. Jacques Audiard, France/Belgium, 2012, 120 mins, subtitles
Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Armand Verdure
Jacques Audiard, (A Prophet, The Beat that My Heart Skipped) firmly establishes himself as one of Europe’s best directors with this powerful and absorbing love story which took the Best Film prize at this years London Film Festival. Put in charge of his young son, Ali leaves Belgium for Antibes to live with his sister and her husband. Whilst working as a bouncer at a local nightclub, Ali meets Stephanie (Cotillard), who works as an Orca Whale trainer at the Marineland park. When Stephanie suffers a horrific accident, she finds that Ali is the only person she can talk with, and their bond begins to grow deeper.
‘Another triumph from Audiard and a Cotillard masterclass, this bruising, tender melodrama lingers long in the memory.’ Empire ****
