Clio Barnard, one of the UK’s most distinctive contemporary filmmakers, follows The Selfish Giant and The Arbor with this searing rural drama. Following her father’s death, farm labourer Alice (Ruth Wilson) returns to Yorkshire to claim ownership of the once beautiful smallholding she believes is hers. But in the intervening years her brother Joe (Mark Stanley) has been struggling to keep both their farm and their father (Sean Bean) going, and her arrival sparks a bitter dispute between them. Inspired by Rose Tremain’s novel Trespass, Barnard weaves a dark contemporary folk tale out of familial trauma and exploitation, set against the stunning Yorkshire landscape.
