The rare, compelling Difret (‘courage’ in Amharic) is loosely based on a real challenge to Ethiopia’s traditionally tolerated practice of forced marriage, illuminating a shocking violation of the rights of young women. On her way back from school 14-year-old Hirut is kidnapped and brutally raped by a gang who try to force her into marrying their leader Tadele. Desperate to escape, Hirut makes a rash move and, arrested and charged, becomes subject to rough rural justice. At heart a delicate portrait of the power of sisterhood and grassroots activism, Difret also depicts a country struggling to both improve its equal rights and maintain a rich indigenous culture.
