Produced by the team behind Control, this amusing, nostalgic biopic of oft-controversial and uniquely talented singer Morrissey, erstwhile frontman of seminal ‘80s band The Smiths, explores his early life in ‘70s Manchester. Jack Lowden (’71, Denial) stars as young Steven Patrick Morrissey; full of alienation, youthful arrogance and nascent musicality, he’s a would-be writer constantly sending letters to the NME while forced to take a job at the tax office. Wry and touching, this sensitive portrait – of a young man struggling to balance his insecurities with an astonishing creative ambition and his sense of romance with quotidian everyday life – is also an evocative picture of the contemporary Manchester music scene.
