Thomas Vinterberg’s (Festen) remake of John Schlesinger’s 1967 classic Thomas Hardy adaptation boasts a screenplay by David Nicholls (One Day) and a superbly spirited central performance by Carey Mulligan (An Education) as beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene. She’s the independent-minded heroine who attracts three different suitors: sheep farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts); handsome sergeant Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge); and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous bachelor. The story explores the nature of love and the qualities of endurance; set against the ravishing beauty of the Dorset landscape.
