The story of beloved Afrobeat pioneer and human rights activist Fela Kuti is told in this joyous, moving doc from Oscar-winning Alex Gibney (We Steal Secrets). Born in Nigeria in 1938, Kuti rose to fame in the ‘70s with Afrobeat, which fused jazz, funk, psychedelic rock and traditional West African chants; and was the sonic backdrop to Africa’s postcolonial activism. But while his music gained in renown, its message of freedom and modernity enraged Nigeria’s ruthless regime. A decade after Kuti’s death, Gibney records preparations for the Broadway musical Fela! and explores this complex, provocative and brilliant performer.
