Dir: Gianfranco Rosi | Italy / France | 2016 | 95 mins | Italian w/English Subtitles

Winner of the Golden Bear for Documentary at the Berlinale, Sacro GRA director Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea could not be more important or timely, exploring as it does the chaos and despair of the ongoing migrant crisis. Set on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, one of Europe’s most symbolic borders, Rosi first embeds us in the life of the island via 12-year old Samuele. But as the film proceeds, he shows us more of the terrible reality of migrant rescue. With quiet profundity, he contrasts the settled lives of Lampedusans with the complete disenfranchisement of the migrants, desperately seeking a place of greater safety.

“This is quiet, unflashy film-making, that nonetheless packs a powerful punch”**** Andrew Pulver, Guardian
