Dir: Damien Chazelle | USA | 2018 | 141 mins
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll
Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong in Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle’s thrilling depiction of the Apollo 11 spaceflight and the moon landings. Both monumental and humane as it explores the vast existential excitement, political considerations and more sober personal implications of the adventure, First Man follows the preternaturally calm Armstrong through the preparations – including the angst and fear of failed NASA tests, the tragic Apollo One cabin fire and the impossibility of justifying his departure to his anxious wife (Claire Foy) and kids – before lift-off and the sublime, surreal climax of his first steps on to the moon itself. Unmissable.
