Cast: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Philip Ettinger, Cedric Kyles

Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Before… trilogy) gives a terrific performance in Paul Schrader’s (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) fierce and thrilling drama; both a study of the uses and abuses of religion in American society and an individual portrait of a profoundly flawed man. Ernst Toller (Hawke) is the solitary, middle-aged pastor of a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York, a historic site suffering from its proximity to a nearby megachurch. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Toller to counsel her radical environmentalist husband, the clergyman is plunged into his tormented past. A gripping study of a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary.
