Dir: Andrea Arnold | UK | 2009 | 120 mins
Cast: Katie Jarvis, Michael Fassbender, Kierston Wareing, Harry Treadaway
Andrea Arnold’s riveting, award-winning 2009 drama is an exhilarating gift; raw, beautiful and bleak; with an astonishing debut performance from Katie Jarvis as Mia, a rebellious but achingly vulnerable teen who, kicked out of school, spends her days drinking and practising hip hop dance routines in an abandoned flat on her estate. Her scornful, hard-partying mother Joanne (Kierston Wareing) neglects Mia’s welfare in favour of her own. But when Joanne’s new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender) takes an interest in Mia and encourages her passion for dance, Mia and Joanne begin to compete for his affection.
“With a terrific performance by debutant Katie Jarvis, this gritty Essex drama shows that director Andrea Arnold is Ken Loach’s natural successor” The Guardian
