Dir: Franc Roddam | UK | 1979 | 115 mins
Cast: Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Toyah, Philip Davis, Sting, Ray Winstone
The ultimate mods vs rockers clash, Franc Roddam’s Quadrophenia is based on The Who’s double-album rock opera. Phil Daniels is angst-ridden London youth Jimmy, who escapes the drudgery of his postal job as a member of the Mods, a sharply dressed gang constantly at odds with their rivals, the Rockers. After a clash in Brighton leads to both trouble and an encounter with the lovely Steph (Leslie Ash), Jimmy – who longs to be like Mod leader Ace Face (Sting) – finds himself longing to return. A blistering benchmark of rock ‘n’ roll cinema, with a cast of established and future stars including Ray Winstone, Timothy Spall and Sting and a monumental soundtrack.
