The first Estonian film nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar, Tangerines is set during the short but brutal 1992 war between Georgia and Abkhazia. In a neutral Estonian village over the border, most have fled the encroaching conflict; but Ivo (veteran national star Lembit Ulfsak), an elderly farmer, stays to help a friend with his tangerine harvest. Then the war arrives on his doorstep when a nearby firefight sees him left with two injured survivors: a Chechen mercenary and a Georgian soldier. Deeply affecting, Tangerines deftly balances pathos and black humour with a deeper critique of unnecessary violence.
