Dir: Peter Bogdanovich | USA | 1971 | 126 mins
Cast: Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, Ellen Burstyn
A pivotal film in the American cinema renaissance of the ‘70s and in director Peter Bogdanovich’s career, this multi-Oscar nominated 1971 classic offers an achingly beautiful portrait of a dying Texas town in the early ‘50s. Shot in evocative black and white and beautifully felt, it follows best friends Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) and Duane (Jeff Bridges), nearing high-school graduation alongside beautiful rich girl Jacy (Cybill Shepherd). Bumping up against local lost souls like Cloris Leachman’s lonely housewife and Ben Johnson’s grizzled cinema proprietor and contemplating their futures, the boys struggle to find a way to escape this dead-end town and build a better life.
