Cast: Jenny Agutter, David Gulpilil, Luc Roeg
Glorious and hallucinatory, Nicolas Roeg’s 1971 classic, regarded as a seminal work of the Australian New Wave, is a strange and spiritual exploration of the Australian outback. In uninhabited central Australia, a young girl (Jenny Agutter) and her little brother (Luc Roeg) are lost. Their father brought them here, but after an episode of shocking violence, they are desperately alone until an Aboriginal man (David Gulpilil, in his first screen performance) arrives on the horizon and wordlessly begins to help them. A work of striking atmospheric contrasts, Walkabout captures the dreamlike quality of the Outback, and how quickly its beauty can turn to menace.
