Dir: Wim Wenders | West Germany / France | 1987 | 128 mins | German/ English w/English subtitles
Cast: Bruno Ganz, Peter Falk, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander
Perhaps Wim Wenders’ most soaringly poetic work, Wings of Desire is a romantic, fantastical study of Berlin, its flawed human inhabitants and its troubling and violent past. Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander) are invisible angels, observing the 1987 city and its Berliners in the streets, in tenement buildings or U-Bahn stations, and in moments of love, artistic struggles and pained introspection; viewing individual lives against the backdrop of an old theatre of war and occupation. A sublimely beautiful film – part meditation, part romance, and profoundly philosophical – it remains a landmark in cinema.
