Dir: Anne Fontaine | France / UK | 2014 | 99 mins
Cast | Gemma Arterton, Jason Flemyng, Fabrice Luchini

In her second Posy Simmonds adaptation (after Stephen Frears’s Tamara Drewe), Gemma Arterton is well cast in this provocative romance inspired by Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. British couple Gemma (Arterton) and Charles (Jason Flemyng) move to a ramshackle farmhouse in the same village where Flaubert wrote his masterpiece a century before. Their neighbour, local baker Martin (Fabrice Luchini) becomes entranced by Gemma’s earthy beauty and sets out to be her guide and mentor in these new surroundings, just as she finds herself at a romantic crossroads. Vastly engaging and enjoyable, Gemma Bovery offers witty feminist commentary, cheeky literary thrills and seductive romance.
