Mad Men’s John Slattery directs this persuasive adaptation of Pete Dexter’s novel starring Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) in one of his last roles, John Turturro, Christina Hendricks and Richard Jenkins. The action starts with the death of a young man at work that’s covered up as an accident by his colleagues. But his mother (Hendricks) is suspicious and asks her luckless husband (Hoffman) to find the murderer and put him in the ground.

A vividly authentic recreation of a working class community, it’s reminiscent of David O. Russell’s The Fighter, with a mordant humour and an eye for tragic-comic detail.
