Director John Boorman (Deliverance) drew from his own childhood experiences for this indelibly touching coming-of-age classic about a boy growing up in and around London during World War II. For young Bill Rowan (Sebastian Rice Edwards), the nightly bombings are an exhilarating if terrifying sight, and provide opportunities to rummage through the rubble with his friends in the mornings. But as Bill plays, his family struggles to remain intact as they suffer through the anguish and losses of wartime. Boorman’s film balances the terror and poignancy of the conflict with humour, lightness and affectionate charm.
