Dir: Amy Berg | USA | 2015 | 103 mins
Narrated by singer-songwriter Cat Power, this affectionate and touching documentary tells the story of Janis Joplin’s evolution into a star via the letters she wrote over the years to her friends, family and collaborators, alongside stunning archival footage. Like Amy Winehouse, Joplin was a white girl with a soulful voice connecting her to black culture, but who couldn’t deal with the onset of fame, and struggled with addiction before her tragic death aged 27. Amy Berg’s doc portrays her as a free spirit; witty, complex, and rebellious, who changed the landscape of music with her astonishing talent.
