Dir. Jean-Luc Godard | France / Italy | 1963 | 103 mins | French/German/Italian w/Eng Subtitles
Cast: Brigitte Bardot, Jack Palance, Michel Piccoli, Fritz Lang
Brigitte Bardot stars in Jean-Luc Godard’s sumptuously stylish and satirical study of a marriage in trouble and of professional relationships; in short, of modern lives. Based on an Alberto Moravia novel, it follows a scriptwriter (Michael Piccoli) adapting Homer’s Odyssey and finds himself torn between the demands of a producer, the director, and his own values; while simultaneously his marriage is breaking down. With gorgeous ‘Scope cinematography and a haunting score, it’s an absolutely beautiful film; an undoubted masterpiece.
“Brigitte Bardot reminds us what all the fuss was about […] sublime” ***** Jonathan Romney, Guardian
