Dir: David Gordon Green | USA | 2014 | 97 mins
Cast | Al Pacino, Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine, Chris Messina

Fresh from his recent comedic turn in Danny Collins, Al Pacino gives a darker performance in David Gordon Green’s (George Washington, All the Real Girls, Joe) Manglehorn. He plays a grouchy locksmith in small-town Texas, embittered by a difficult past. Hanging out with a local hustler (Harmony Korine) or his cat, failing to care appropriately for his son (Chris Messina) and rejecting the sweet advances of bank teller Dawn (Holly Hunter), he is a sour study in regret. But can he recognise new chances to resolve his troubling past and move on? Pacino is a delight to watch in Green’s spacious, tender and exploratory film.

“A beguiling, minor-key study of the lion in winter […] vital and exciting” **** Xan Brooks, Guardian
