Dir: Mohammad Rasoulof | Iran | 2013 | 125 mins | Persian w/Eng ST
(Cast information unavailable)

Based on a true story, Mohammad Rasoulof’s searing drama is an incendiary critique of Iranian censorship. In 1995, the regime makes a failed assassination attempt against 21 writers and journalists. Almost 20 years later, a document detailing the incident remains a threat – and censors have hired two hitmen to take out anybody who knows about it. An extraordinary document in many ways – Rasouof is himself banned from filmmaking in Iran, and was arrested alongside Jafar Panahi in 2010 – this is a slow-burn political thriller and a furious, explosive plea for regime change. “A crackling, tense thriller, graced with beautifully measured performances, that explores with wisdom and sorrow the best and worst in human nature.” ***** Leslie Felperin, The Guardian
