Dir: Jeff Nichols | USA | 2016 | 112 mins
Cast: Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver

Jeff Nichols’s (Take Shelter, Mud) marvellous, mysterious and very Spielbergian sci-fi fuses the thrill of the supernatural with the genre delights of a road movie. It follows Roy (Michael Shannon), who goes on the run with his young son Alton after discovering the boy possesses otherworldly qualities; fleeing the FBI’s Paul Sevier (Adam Driver) and using Alton’s powers to astounding effect to aid their escape. Inky, atmospheric and lovingly crafted, Nichols revisits the themes of the supernatural in the everyday he evoked so memorably in Take Shelter, supported by terrific acting from a cast including Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton and Sam Shepard.

“Jeff Nichols’s sci-fi chase movie mixes super-powers, religion and an offbeat cast to dazzling, Spielbergian effect […] A darkly addictive mystery” **** Tim Robey, Telegraph
