Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings) gives a wonderfully poignant performance as the eponymous Mr. Holmes in this handsome, moving and complex imagining of the famous detective’s future. In 1947, an ageing Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare first-hand. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, he spends his days beekeeping with only the company of his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the unsolved case that forced him to retire.
