Nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Claude Barras’s highly original My Life as a Courgette tears up the rulebook for children’s cinema. Adapted from Gilles Paris’s book by Céline Sciamma (Girlhood), this melancholy yet witty claymation traces the effects of childhood tragedy. Nine-year-old Icare (known to his friends as ‘Courgette’) finds himself in a local orphanage after a family tragedy, where he becomes part of a group of children with their own traumas to bear. Dealing with mature themes and eschewing sentimentality, this stunning animation explores the ways we adapt to the world to make the best of our lives.
