Pandora's Box with live piano accompaniment

This event is presented as part of our Centenary celebrations: the Silent Spotlight strand and has been generously supported by Cinema for All – Yorkshire. The film is being screened from a 35mm restoration print from 2006.

One of the great silent films, GW Pabst’s Pandora’s Box is renowned for its sensational storyline, Weimar-period setting and its bewitching lead performance by iconic star Louise Brooks. Following the rise and fall of Lulu (Brooks), a spirited, but innocent showgirl, whose sexual magnetism wreaks havoc on men and women alike, Pandora’s Box – imbued with a singular eroticism – was controversial in its day and subsequently underappreciated for decads but now feels dazzingly modern. This is a fantastic opportunity to see one of the cornerstones of silent film on screen.

Silent film musician Darius Battiwalla will accompany the film on the piano.

The event will begin with a short introduction by Lecturer and Author Keith Withall. Film running time 131 minutes: overall event running time approx 150 minutes.

How we list our screening timings has changed. We now list the actual film / live arts event start time, not the time of our pre-show programme. Doors usually open 45 mins before this. Please arrive in good time before the start time listed, and enjoy!
