Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson | USA | 2017 | 130 mins
Cast; Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps, Lesley Manville, Camilla Rutherford
A gorgeous, intoxicating and masterful film, Phantom Thread reunites Daniel Day-Lewis (in purportedly his final film role) with his There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson. Set amid the smoky glamour of post-war London, it finds brilliant couturier Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) at the centre of British fashion; dressing royalty, heiresses, debutantes and dames. Woodcock lives a carefully calibrated life that is disrupted when he meets young, strong-willed Alma (Vicky Krieps), who becomes his muse and lover. An illuminating portrait of an artist with baroque flourishes of comedy and surrealism, it’s a wonderful last film for Day-Lewis to end on.
“There is such pure delicious pleasure in this film” ***** Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
