Dir: Blake Edwards | USA | 1982 | 134 mins
Cast: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren

Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) gives a sublime performance in Blake Edwards’s (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) sparkling, sophisticated, gender swap musical and romantic comedy, scored by Henry Mancini. Originating from Weimar musical Viktor und Viktoria, it sees Andrews play British soprano Victoria, struggling to find club work in 1930s Paris. Trying to scam a free meal, she meets cabaret performer Toddy (Robert Preston), who alights on a classic ruse: he’ll bill her as a male, female impersonator! When the nightclubs eat it up, the duo makes it big and a Chicago mobster (James Garner) becomes smitten with her. But keeping it a secret is no easy task
