Dir: Jonathan Demme | 2015 | USA | 101 mins
Cast: Meryl Streep, Mamie Gummer, Kevin Kline, Rick Springfield
Watch Meryl Streep rock out in Jonathan Demme’s (Rachel Getting Married, Philadelphia) rambunctious, fantastically enjoyable and unexpectedly moving comedy-drama, scripted by Diablo Cody (Juno). She’s Ricki, the star of a bar-blues covers band whose peripatetic existence ended her marriage and estranged her from her children. Then: her ex-husband (Kevin Kline) calls to let her know their daughter Julie (played by Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer) is in trouble; and, reunited with Julie and her other wary children, she starts to mend fences. In another director’s hands it could be formulaic – in Demme’s it’s an emotive, insightful, musical treat – and Streep is a joy.
“Meryl Streep plays a blinder in this sharp, funny and oddly moving story of an ageing rocker attempting to reconnect with her estranged daughter” **** Mark Kermode, Observer
