Dir: Stanley Donen | 1952 | USA | 98 mins
Cast: Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, Jean Hagen
After the recent sad loss of Debbie Reynolds, revisit her finest onscreen moment in Stanley Donen’s 1952 musical comedy, a gloriously romantic, airy classic co-starring Gene Kelly at his quicksilver best, dancing with joyous, effortless charm as silent film star Don Lockwood. In 1927, Lockwood has worked his way up (with partner Cosmo Brown – Donald O’Connor) to become a top star. His on-screen partner, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) must have her terrible voice dubbed with the arrival of the ‘talkies’ – and the girl chosen is singer Kathy (Reynolds). Full of magical song and dance sequences, it’s a perfect film.
